Addiction is a family disease. This means that the addiction of one family member affects the entire family. When a loved one is in addiction treatment, it can be hard to know what to do and how to help. If you have a loved one battling addiction, Al-Anon can offer support.

For the families of people in addiction treatment, Al-Anon can be a lifesaver. This 12-step program provides much-needed support and guidance for those who are struggling to cope with a loved one’s addiction. It can help you find strength and clarity as you cope with your loved one’s addiction.

If you’re not familiar with it, here’s what you need to know about Al-Anon.

What Is Al-Anon?

Al-Anon is a free addiction recovery support group for families and friends of alcoholics.

Al-Anon is based on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, which are designed to help people recover from addiction. The 12 steps encourage participants to admit that they have a problem and seek help from a higher power. It also encourages people to make amends with those who have been hurt by their addiction, and continue to work towards recovery.

Al-Anon meetings are held all over the world and offer a supportive environment for people who are affected by someone else’s addiction. Participants can share their experiences, learn from others in the group, and find encouragement on the road to recovery.

For young people who have a parent with addiction, Alateen meetings are available. Alateen meetings are specifically for children and teenagers who are affected by someone else’s addiction.

What Happens in an Al-Anon Meeting?

Al-Anon and Alateen meetings are open to anyone who has been affected by someone else’s addiction. You can attend whether you are the spouse of an alcoholic, the parent of a drug addict, or the friend of a gambling addict.

At an Al-Anon meeting, participants are encouraged to share their experiences and feelings about living with addiction. The meetings are confidential, which means that what is said in the group stays in the group. This provides a safe space for people to share their experience, strength, and other struggles.

Similar to any group therapy, Al-anon is guided by a standard procedure on how the meetings work. A person will be assigned to make the opening remarks before the sharing of Al-Anon members. If a new member is present, that person or people will be welcomed with great enthusiasm and introduced to the group.

For the new members, below are some of the things you can expect from Al-anon meetings:

  • It adapts the 12-step program to have a systematic way of coping with the situation.
  • To maintain a respectful and private environment, the names of group members are never shared with anyone outside of the meeting. Members also take care to respect everyone’s differences.
  • In some instances, the venue of the meeting can happen at a religious site but does not entail an affiliation with a specific religion.
  • All group meetings will have a unique agenda to talk to, making it dynamic and updated.
  • In group sessions, it is very important to be supportive of one another and work together. This is to find the best coping mechanisms for everyone’s individual situation.
  • After every group meeting, it is tradition for there to be a closing speech. If members feel comfortable, they are free to hug everyone goodbye.
